Women of virtue and vice.
Almost unbelievable! An Utrecht brewer’s wife picks up a pickaxe and attacks an imperial castle with it. A God-fearing soul has herself walled into a tiny cell in a church for the rest of her life. Another provides free housing for the needy. Yet another exalted spirit has to hide behind a curtain to take classes at university – and enters the history books nonetheless. To a fervent female supporter of the Reformation we owe the effects of the iconoclasm in Utrecht. And a heavy ‘English whore’ wrecked the city’s goods crane. Courageous women, clever women, contrarian women, inspired women, unique women and what connects them to Utrecht.
During this guided city walk through Utrecht, you can hear more about Trijn van Leemput, Cornelia Spaens, the hermitess Sister Bertken, Maria van Pallaes, Anna Maria van Schurman, Belle van Zuylen and others. Who were these women, what made them special, and what do they mean to Utrecht and its history?
A special city tour through Utrecht – also for men, by the way.
