Hello! I am Claudia Schipper and I founded Kukullus to help providing people around me with beautiful memories. There is always something to discover, isn’t there? Will we see each other soon?

I have been developing city walks and museum tours for Kukullus since 2011. In doing so, I like to delve into things that are not always easy to see at first glance. I like to take the time for the place or work of art we are visiting during a guided tour. And I offer the participants time to familiarise themselves with a special painting or place. Where possible, preferring slow and unrushed viewing (and listening) to working things off hurriedly and superficially – that’s what I value. I am convinced that you will enjoy a guided tour far more that way. Just take your time for a little amazement!

I provide guided tours with competent guidance and, where possible, with flexible adaptation to individual wishes. Think of an engaging, enriching museum tour at the Mauritshuis in The Hague, at the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, or engaging city walks along surprising places in Delft, Gouda or Utrecht.

“I prefer to show people what I myself find beautiful, remarkable or spectacular. A personal note is actually unavoidable in this. And when people leave with new insights and with a reaction like ‘I didn’t expect that’, and moreover with fond memories of what they have seen, heard, experienced – then I consider my mission successful.”

Who am I and what makes me tick?

I am an art historian with a PhD in my discipline, on a topic mainly related to 16th- and 17th-century art. My experience in European art history is multifaceted and I stick my nose into all possible aspects of history, art and culture. And I like to share what fascinates me in the process – in an accessible, understandable way. Why I do it all, you can read and you can also read here (in Dutch).

An eye-catching detail and virtuoso brushstrokes by Rembrandt or Vermeer, a piece of marble almost turned to flesh by a skilful sculptor, a portrait by Thérèse Schwartze can captivate me as much as a painting by Fra Angelico from the Italian Renaissance, embroidery on old textiles, the oeuvre of Max Liebermann, the way oil paints for painters is produced or the abandoned ore mines in a remote valley in the Austrian Alps.
I have a soft spot for the work of Bernard Palissy, August Macke, the Italian Macchiaioli and the ingenuity of old crafts.

And when I’m not working for Kukullus and I am not on the move? Then I prefer being outside in nature or making things with wool, yarn and fibres.

I speak Dutch, German and English and I am looking forwaard to meet you!

Because also language is an important part of culture, I also started teaching Dutch for German native speaking beginners a few years ago. I find the enthusiasm with which people sometimes want to learn Dutch very stimulating. If knowledge of the other person’s language also promotes joint understanding between the people in the Netherlands and Germany, then I am happy to help if I can.
As an extension of this, I am also regularly engaged in the field of Dutch-German translations and communication.

And why the name Kukullus?

I am passionate of art and culture. I want others to enjoy them too – by helping to immerse themselves in them. Be it for an hour, a day or a longer period. Like the Roman senator and military man Lucullus made his guests indulge at opulent banquets. This Lucullus with his gourmet ambitions became a proverbial household name in Germany, where I come from. Thus, as a pun on his name, the name Kukullus was born. Because the goal is for my customers to feast on ‘Kunst'(art) and ‘Kultur’.
