The Rijksmuseum • guided tour in a great museum

A monumental building, filled to the brim with treasures of Dutch art and history. Tenderly carved sculptures of Saints, great altar pieces of important masters and art of the seventeenth century in all its facets, dating from a period when it was hard to surpass artists of the Netherlands in their productivity and their quality.

This and much more can be admired during our guided tour in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The internationally famous core of the museum is formed by the Gallery of Honour (eregalerij). Here and in the neighbouring rooms, highlights of Dutch art can be admired, with Rembrandt’s Nightwatch as the superb eye-catcher at the end of the hall. Exploring the Rijksmuseum is a must for Amsterdam visitors. Make some time to visit this immense treasury of Dutch art and history. The best way to do this is with a (private) tour guide who leads you along the highlights of Dutch art, familiarizing you with details worth knowing about the 17th century of the Netherlands – such an important period in the country’s history – and introducing you to some of Europe’s most important artworks – while paying close attention to your personal questions and wishes.

Guided museum tour along masterpieces in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

During this guided tour you will see famous works of the history of Netherlandish art and you will receive an interesting overview of developments and background information on various genres of painting of the Golden Age of the Dutch republic.
Among the most remarkable works of art, there are important examples of Rembrandt’s painting like his Nightwatch and the so called Jewish bride, great portraits by Frans Hals, gentle paintings by Johannes Vermeer as his so-called Milkmaid or the Reading woman, magnificent still lifes and impressive landscapes like those painted by Jacob van Ruisdael.

Beautiful works of art by famous and lesser-known masters

The permanent exhibition also presents works by quite some Rembrandt pupils, examples of the so called peasant genre by Adriaen van Ostade, works of the Italianate painters like Jan Both and Michiel Sweerts, subtle paintings by the Leiden fijnschilders, or ‘fine painters’ Gerrit Dou, Gabriël Metsu, Gerard Terborch and Frans van Mieris, and many other magnificent works of art.

The period preceding this era is represented with artworks of amazing quality as well. Many high-calibre masterpieces from the Middle Ages and Renaissance survived the iconoclasm and can be seen on the lower floor.

The objects in the permanent exhibition of the Rijksmuseum allow enriching insights into Dutch art and history. The Rijksmuseum owes its international fame to its magnificent collection of art of the 17th century. But from medieval sculptures to photography of the 20th century, artworks from many periods are represented. The building itself is wonderful to experience as well. This makes it also rewarding to book a longer guided tour of the Rijksmuseum of, say, 2 to 2.5 hours.
